Local customs and traditions

Work in groups.

1. Choose a custom or tradition practiced in your hometown.

We chose the custom of celebrating the Tet holiday, or Lunar New Year, which is widely practiced in our hometown and all over Vietnam.

2. Search for information about that custom or tradition. You can ask your parents or grandparents about it. 

• What is the custom/tradition? Tet is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It's the Vietnamese New Year based on the lunar calendar.

• Who practices it? Almost everyone in Vietnam, regardless of their location or background, celebrates Tet.

• Where and when do people practice it? It is celebrated nationwide, usually in late January or early February, depending on the lunar calendar. The celebration lasts for about a week.

• What do people do? Activities include cleaning and decorating homes, cooking special holiday meals (such as Bánh Chưng and Bánh Dày), giving and receiving red envelopes containing money for good luck, visiting relatives and friends, and paying respects to ancestors. Fireworks displays and dragon dances are also common in some areas.

• Why do people practice that custom/tradition? The primary purpose of Tet is to enjoy a new beginning and to remember ancestors. It's a time for families to come together, to appreciate the past year and to look forward to the future.

3. Report your findings to your class. You can use visual aids to illustrate your report.

• Speaker 1: Today, our group would like to share about a special custom practiced in our hometown and all over Vietnam: the Tet holiday or Lunar New Year.

• Speaker 2: Tet is the most important and popular holiday in Vietnam, celebrated by everyone, regardless of their location or background.

• Speaker 3: The celebration of Tet usually occurs in late January or early February, based on the lunar calendar. The celebration lasts for about a week.

• Speaker 4: During Tet, Vietnamese people engage in several traditional activities. They clean and decorate their homes, cook special holiday meals such as Bánh Chưng and Bánh Dày, and give and receive red envelopes containing money for good luck.

• Speaker 1: That's right. It's also a time for visiting relatives and friends, paying respects to ancestors, and watching fireworks displays and dragon dances, especially in rural areas.

• Speaker 2: But why do people celebrate Tet? Well, it's a time to enjoy a new beginning and remember ancestors. It brings families together to appreciate the past year and look forward to the future.

• Speaker 3: And that's our report on the Tet holiday. We hope it gives you an insight into this important Vietnamese tradition.
