Collocation chủ đề Sports và ứng dụng trong IELTS Writing Task 2

Khi xét đến khía cạnh từ vựng trong bài thi IELTS học thuật, thí sinh không những được kiểm tra ở vốn từ vựng đơn lẻ mà còn ở khả năng kết hợp các từ vựng để tạo thành collocations một cách tự nhiên nhất. Điều này được thể hiện chi tiết trong Bảng tiêu chí đánh giá IELTS Writing task 2 (Band descriptors). Cụ thể, ở tiêu chí về Lexical Resource, mức điểm 7.0 yêu cầu thí sinh có khả năng “sử dụng các điểm từ vựng ít phổ biến, với khả năng vận dụng phong cách và cụm từ một cách thích hợp và tự nhiên”. Với phân loại trên, sau đây tác giả muốn giới thiệu đến người đọc một vài collocations thường được dùng trong chủ đề Sports – một trong những chủ đề xuất hiện trong các bài thi IELTS.

Collocations dạng Adjectives and Nouns

A convincing victory: Một chiến thắng thuyết phục.

A personal best: Thành tích tốt nhất của bản thân.

Ví dụ: By having scored 41 goals this season, Robert achieved his personal best. (Ghi được 41 bàn thắng trong mùa giải này, Robert đã đạt được thành thích cá nhân tốt nhất.)

To set a new record: Thiết lập một kỉ lục mới.

Ví dụ: Usain Bolt has set a new world record by completing his 100m race in just 9.58 seconds. (Usain Bolt đã lập kỉ lục thế giới mới khi hoàn thành chặng đua 100 mét chỉ trong 9,58 giây.)

To enhance someone’s performance: Nâng cao hiệu suất thi đấu.

Ví dụ: All athletes are banned from taking drugs to enhance their performance. (Tất cả vận động viên đều bị cấm sử dụng chất kích thích để nâng cao hiệu quả thi đấu.)

A training session: Buổi tập.

Ví dụ: Professional football players are expected to attend regular training sessions with their clubs. (Cầu thủ bóng đá chuyên nghiệp phải thường xuyên tham gia các buổi tập với câu lạc bộ của mình.)

A record holder: Người nắm giữ kỉ lục.

Ví dụ: Max is the record holder for being the youngest driver to win a Formula One championship race. (Max là người nắm giữ kỉ lục là người trẻ nhất từng thắng cuộc đua xe Công thức 1.)

Collocations dạng Verbs and Expressions with prepositions

To keep in shape: Duy trì nền tảng thể chất tốt.

Keep in shape

Ví dụ: He goes jogging every morning to keep himself in shape. (Anh ấy chạy bộ mỗi buổi sáng để rèn luyện sức khỏe.)

To break through the defence: Xuyên phá hàng phòng ngự.

Ví dụ: Despite having two strikers, the English team failed to break through the French defence. (Mặc dù ra sân với hai tiền đạo, đội bóng Anh đã thất bại trong việc xuyên phá hàng phòng ngự của đội tuyển Pháp.)

Collocations dạng Verbs and Adverbs

To be narrowly defeated/beaten: Thua sát nút.

Ví dụ: The home team deserved to win, but they were narrowly defeated. (Đội nhà xứng đáng thắng trận này, nhưng họ lại thua sít sao.)

To desperately want: Rất muốn.

Ví dụ: He desperately wants to win the medal, so he has been training hard since January. (Anh ấy rất muốn có được huy chương, nên đã ra sức tập luyện chăm chỉ kể từ tháng Một.)

Absolutely brilliant: Thực sự tuyệt vời.

Ví dụ: He has just scored an absolutely brilliant goal. (Anh ấy vừa mới ghi một bàn thắng thực sự tuyệt vời.)

Some people think that sport teaches children how to compete, while others believe that children learn teamwork.

While sport is believed to help raise a sense of competitiveness among children, it is also considered an opportunity for them to practice working collectively. In my opinion, this is both true in either way. I believe if trained appropriately, children can develop both individual and teamwork skills through sports.

To begin with, it is evident that playing sports helps children learn to compete. It might be due to the fact that all sports seek winners who are best prepared and well-trained. Therefore, learning to compete means that children have to put much effort in training sessions to enhance their performance, including strength, stamina and durability. Not only can sport encourage children to keep themselves in shape, it also helps children gain experience from failure. Having known victories are challenging, children might value their achievement. As a result, children attending sports are expected to be more competitive in their future career. A study carried out by San Antonio Sports in 2018 revealed that over 60% of the surveyed business owners attended sport activities when they were students. It is clear that doing sports can help children with developing competitiveness.

Besides the benefits of teaching children how to compete, sports can help them develop teamwork spirit at young ages. It might be because many sports require team performance, such as football, volleyball or basketball. Consequently, not only are children required to self-improve, they also need to manage to work with their partners. Working collectively, children might learn to communicate and strengthen solidarity between team members. The better the teamwork is, the better the performance becomes. For instance, in 2018, Vietnamese U23 football team has achieved convincing victories over Asian giants thanks to the solidarity among team members, and only got narrowly defeated in the final match. It is clear that sports can help children practice teamwork at the early stage of their lives.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that sports are beneficial for children. Not only can sport help children learn to compete, it also teaches them to work together. In other words, I believe sport is a valuable approach to educate children.
