I’d like to talk about a traditional Vietnamese story called The Legend of Chung and Day Cakes. I first heard this story from my grandmother every year before Tet. She usually told it while we were getting ready for the holiday. Over time, I remembered the story clearly because it explains where our Tet cakes come from and why they are so meaningful in Vietnamese culture.

So basically, the story is about a king who asked his sons to find a special food to offer to their ancestors. Each son tried to show his wealth, but one son, who wasn’t rich, chose a different way. He used simple rice to make two cakes, one round and one square, to represent the sky and the earth. In the end, his idea won the contest, and these cakes became a Tet tradition.

Well, one traditional story I clearly remember from my childhood is The Legend of Chung and Day Cakes. My grandmother told me this story during Tet preparations, usually when the whole family was together. Every time she told it, the atmosphere felt warm and familiar. For me, it wasn’t just a story, but part of the feeling of Tet and being close to my family.

The story itself is quite simple, but very touching. It talks about a poor son who couldn’t afford expensive gifts, so he used rice to make two cakes with deep meaning. One cake stands for the earth, and the other stands for the sky. Somehow, this simple choice feels very human to me. It shows care, respect, and a sincere heart, which makes the story easy to relate to.

By turning a limitation into a strength, he presented a clear message about respect, balance, and gratitude. In the end, his thoughtful choice won the king’s approval and officially turned these cakes into a Tet tradition.

Beyond the story itself, the lesson is what stays with me the longest. It teaches me that true value comes from meaning and intention, not from how expensive something looks. More importantly, it reminds me to cherish family moments and cultural traditions. Because of this story, Tet feels deeper and more personal, not just a celebration, but a reminder of connection and gratitude.
