I’d like to talk about a place whose image has been tainted by environmental pollution. It’s a small village called Velen, which is located in the rural area of my hometown.

It has pretty much everything we need: tranquil scenery, fresh air, accommodating locals, and of course: tasty food. Besides, it’s just a 30-minute drive from the city center. Everything seemed perfect for a peaceful, much-needed retreat.

But I wouldn’t tell you this story had it gone well like we expected. When we got there, we’re literally shocked at how severely polluted the river was. There were black and greasy chemical impurities floating around the river bank which gave off a revolting smell. I guess they must have come from untreated toxic waste discharged from nearby factories and plants. But of course we can’t blame everything on industrial activities. I heard from the locals that a large part of the river bank was strewn with litter from previous camping groups. The funny thing is: some of them were self-proclaimed “green volunteers” who organized trips as part of their “environmental” campaigns. Oh the irony!

As if the appalling scene near the river wasn’t enough to ruin our experience, we soon realized that water pollution isn’t the only problem here. In contrast to my expectation, the atmosphere in Velen was ravaged by exhaust fumes coming from all kinds of stuff: domestic and factory chimneys, dilapidated vehicles, and trash burning sites. And the sad thing is that most people here are too ignorant to know the consequences of their actions. It seemed like any attempt to reverse the situation would be an uphill struggle.
