Mô tả số liệu

Figure

Figure nghĩa là số liệu, chỉ được dùng để chỉ những con số theo phương diện mặt số.

Ví dụ:

The figures had fluctuated throughout the years.

Dịch nghĩa: Những số liệu đã dao động lên xuống qua nhiều năm.

Number of, amount of 

Number of và amount of thường đi trước một danh từ, được dùng để chỉ số lượng của danh từ ấy.

Ví dụ: 

The number of people traveling to and from the UK had fluctuated throughout the years.

 ≈ The amount of people traveling to and from the UK had fluctuated throughout the years.

Dịch nghĩa: Số lượng người đi du lịch đến và từ Vương quốc Anh đã dao động lên xuống qua nhiều năm.

Percentage (of) 

Percentage là số phần trăm, có thể dùng để chỉ con số phần trăm, hoặc đi trước of và danh từ để chỉ tỉ trọng phần trăm mà danh từ ấy chiếm trong biểu đồ.

Ví dụ: 

The line graph compares the percentages of people traveling to and from the UK.

Dịch nghĩa: Biểu đồ đường thẳng so sánh số phần trăm người đi du lịch đến và từ Vương quốc Anh.

Dịch nghĩa: Doanh số bán của cửa hàng A chiếm một phần lớn trong tổng doanh thu.

Phân số

Trong tiếng Anh, phân số được viết bằng cách viết tử số là số đếm bình thường (one, two, three, four, ...) trước rồi viết mẫu số là số thứ tự (first, second (không thông dụng), third, fourth, ...) và nối chúng bằng dấu gạch ngang. Lưu ý nếu như tử số lớn hơn một thì mẫu số phải thêm “s” ở cuối (thirds, fourths, …).

Trường hợp ½ thì thường được viết là half, và động từ của nó là halve, tức giảm xuống còn một nửa, chia đôi.

Ví dụ: 

Country A’s GDP in 2020 was only two-thirds that of itself in 2018.

Dịch nghĩa: GDP của nước A vào năm 2020 chỉ còn ⅔ so với vào năm 2018.

Country B’s GDP in 2020 was only half that of itself in 2018.

≈ Country B’s GDP halved from 2018 to 2020.

Dịch nghĩa: GDP của nước B trong năm 2020 chỉ còn một nửa so với năm 2018.

Bội số (gấp nhiều lần)

• Double, triple

• Twofold, threefold, fourfold, …

Ví dụ: 

Country C’s GDP in 2020 was double that of itself in 2023.

≈ There was a twofold increase in country C’s GDP from 2020 to 2023.

Từ vựng về nhóm tuổi

One person:

1. He is 10 years old.

2. He is a 10-year-old.

3. He is aged 10.

More than one person:

1. The children in the class are all 10 years old.

2. It is a class of 10-year-olds

3. It is a class 10-year-old children.

4. The children in the class are all aged 10.

Age groups with more than one person:

1. The chart shows the hobbies of children (who are) between 10 and 12 years old.

4. The chart shows the hobbies of children (who are) aged 10 to 12.

Dịch nghĩa: Biểu đồ trên cho thấy sở thích của trẻ nhỏ trong nhóm 10 đến 12 tuổi.

Một số lưu ý khác:

• Children = youngsters = the young = young people (trẻ em, người trẻ tuổi)

• The number of people in their … (forties, fifties, etc.) (những người ở độ tuổi nào đó, ví dụ như độ tuổi 40-49, 50-59 tuổi, vv.)

• Teenagers (miêu tả độ tuổi teen, tức từ 11-19 tuổi)

• The elderly = elderly people = senior citizens (người già)

Giới tính

1. Male và female vừa là danh từ đếm được vừa là tính từ, và nó được dùng cho người ở bất cứ độ tuổi nào

   Eg: The number of males aged under 14 years old was 100 The number of male children aged under 14 years old was 100

1. Men và women chỉ dùng cho người lớn. Tức khi đề bài nói đối tượng là children hoặc là người dưới 18 tuổi thì không nên dùng từ này để thay thế

2. Boys và girls chỉ nên được dùng cho trẻ em

Dịch nghĩa: Như biểu đồ đã cho thấy, số tiền chi tiêu hàng tuần cho đồ ăn của thanh thiếu niên từ 14 đến 17 tuổi thì cao nhất so với bất kì món hàng nào khác.

Từ vựng về tên nước và người nước đó

Trong phần đề bài, nếu câu hỏi không liệt kê tên nước (e.g. “in three countries”), bạn có hai cách để viết lại trong introduction của mình như sau

“in Britain, France and Germany”

“in three countries, namely Britain, France and Germany”.

Không quên dùng “the” trước 1 số nước như “the USA”, “the UK” và the “US” 

Ví dụ:

The number of elderly people in the USA rose over the period shown.

≈ The number of Americans aged 65 and over rose over the period shown. (Số người cao tuổi ở Hoa Kỳ đã gia tăng qua khoảng thời gian được nhắc đến.)

Canada also saw a rise in the number of elderly people. (Canada cũng đã thấy sự tăng trưởng trong số lượng người cao tuổi.)

However, the figure for Australia fell. (Tuy vậy, số liệu của Úc đã giảm.)

1. Các từ và cum từ paraphrase số lượng người dùng xe ô tô, chúng ta sử dụng tương tự với nhiều phương tiện khác như bus, train…

Có thể thay thế chỗ trống bằng bất kì phương tiện giao thông nào để nói về số người sử dụng phương tiện đó.

Ví dụ:

Dịch nghĩa: Biểu đồ cho thấy quá trình sản xuất cá ngừ đóng hộp qua ba giai đoạn của nó.

Be produced, be made, be manufactured

Ví dụ: 

The diagram shows how canned tuna was produced in its three stages.

Dịch nghĩa: Biểu đồ cho thấy quá trình sản xuất cá ngừ đóng hộp qua ba giai đoạn của nó.
