Why do people help each other?
Helping others is a unique characteristic of human nature in ubiquitous cultures and societies. It is a selfless act that people do for various reasons, including altruism, social pressure, empathy, reciprocity, and self-satisfaction. This essay will analyze what motivates us to lend a hand to those in need.
Two subjective reasons are altruism and empathy. Altruism is the willingness to assist others without expecting anything in return, while empathy is the ability to understand and share another person’s feelings. For instance, donating to a disaster relief fund or even offering a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on. These acts are motivated by a desire for a better. Helping others releases stress, boosting mood and countering cortisol which drives people to help each other enthusiastically.
Based on reciprocity, helping others strengthens social bonds and creates a supportive community. For example, assisting with tasks like fixing a flat tire or moving belongings into a new apartment can reinforce relationships and build a sense of community.
After all, there are various reasons why individuals assist each other, including building social bonds, feeling empathy, creating reciprocity, and expressing altruism, which boils down to a desire for human connection and creating a better, more compassionate, and supportive society.
