Các cụm từ thay thế cho “However” trong IELTS Writing Task 2

Một trong những từ thường xuyên sử dụng trong IELTS Writing Task 2 chỉ “sự tương phản” - dùng để đưa ra luận điểm tương phản với luận điểm đã nêu trước đó - chính là “However”. Tuy nhiên, việc sử dụng từ này  lặp đi lặp lại trong bài có thể dẫn đến lỗi lặp từ, cộng với việc từ “However” chỉ thuộc mức độ A1 (theo Từ điển Oxford) sẽ khiến cho thí sinh khó đạt được điểm cao ở tiêu chí Lexical Resource. Vì vậy, nhằm giúp thí sinh sử dụng linh hoạt các từ vựng trong IELTS Writing Task 2 và đa dạng hóa, nâng cấp vốn từ vựng của bản thân, bài viết sau sẽ giới thiệu các cụm từ thay thế cho However kèm theo ví dụ và bài tập áp dụng cụ thể.

Giới thiệu về các từ chỉ “sự tương phản” trong IELTS Writing Task 2

Bài thi IELTS Writing Task 2 thường yêu cầu thí sinh trình bày quan điểm của bản thân về đa dạng những chủ đề khác nhau. Trong đó, yêu cầu so sánh hai đối tượng, ý kiến khác nhau, thậm chí trái ngược nhau là một trong những đề bài thường xuyên được đặt ra cho người viết, dẫn tới việc cần sử dụng những từ vựng chỉ “sự tương phản”, điển hình nhất là từ “However”. Tuy nhiên, nếu chỉ sử dụng lặp lại “However" cho cả bài viết có thể khiến cho thí sinh khó đạt được điểm cao ở tiêu chí Lexical Resource. Vì vậy, việc sử dụng đa dạng các từ vựng và cấu trúc khác nhau để paraphrase cho “However” là điều cần thiết ở các dạng bài IELTS Writing Task 2 yêu cầu người viết trình bày quan điểm cá nhân về đối tượng.

Albeit

Cấu trúc:

Level: C2.

Nghĩa Tiếng Anh: although, despite the stated thing (Dịch: mặc dù, bất chấp những điều nói trước đó).

Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: mặc dù, bất chấp.

Ví dụ:

• Continuous assessment methods, albeit requiring arduous work from both students and educators, may create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency. (Dịch: Các hình thức đánh giá thường xuyên (đánh giá quá trình học tập của học sinh), dù yêu cầu rất nhiều công việc cho cả học sinh và giáo viên, nhưng có thể tạo ra ảnh hưởng tích cực đối với năng lực học tập của người học.)

• Continuous assessment methods have drawn some criticisms, albeit ones that are unfair.  (Dịch: Các hình thức đánh giá thường xuyên vẫn nhận về một số chỉ trích, dù những chỉ trích đó không công bằng cho lắm.)

• Conventional paper-and-pencil exams, albeit unfair for some reasons, may be suitable for important situations such as university admission. (Dịch: Hình thức thi bằng giấy bút truyền thống, dù không công bằng vì một số lý do nhưng vẫn thích hợp hơn cho những kì thi quan trọng như thi đại học.)

• Continuous assessment methods have drawn more attention, albeit slowly. (Dịch: Dù chậm nhưng các hình thức đánh giá thường xuyên đang dần được chú ý hơn.)

Một số từ vựng và cấu trúc tương đương:

• Although + adj/adv: mặc dù
  Ví dụ: Conventional paper-and-pencil exams, although unfair for some reasons, may be suitable for important situations such as university admission. (Dịch: Hình thức thi bằng giấy bút truyền thống, dù không công bằng vì một số lý do nhưng vẫn thích hợp hơn cho những kì thi quan trọng như thi đại học.)

• Although/Even though + S + V: mặc dù
  Ví dụ: Although conventional paper-and-pencil exams are unfair for some reasons, they may be suitable for important situations such as university admission. 

• Despite/In spite of + n/v-ing: mặc dù
  Ví dụ: Despite/In spite of being unfair for some reasons, conventional paper-and-pencil exams may be suitable for important situations such as university admission.

Lưu ý:

• Cần đặt dấu phẩy “,” trước “albeit” trong hầu hết các trường hợp (xem lại các ví dụ trên)

• “Albeit” KHÔNG dùng để bắt đầu một mệnh đề như “Although” hay “Even though”

Ví dụ:

• Đúng: We decided to buy the house, although the price made us hesitate.

• Sai:  We decided to buy the house, albeit the price made us hesitate.

Nonetheless

Level: C1.

Nghĩa Tiếng Anh: despite what has just been said or done (Dịch: bất chấp những điều đã nói hoặc làm trước đó).

Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: Tuy nhiên, mặc dù vậy.

Ví dụ:

• The continuous assessment method requires arduous work from both students and educators. Nonetheless, it can create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency. (Dịch: Hình thức đánh giá thường xuyên (đánh giá quá trình học tập của học sinh)yêu cầu rất nhiều công việc cho cả học sinh và giáo viên. Tuy nhiên, nó có thể tạo ra ảnh hưởng tích cực đối với năng lực học tập của người học.)

• The continuous assessment method requires arduous work from both students and educators, but it can create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency nonetheless. 

• Despite requiring arduous work from both students and educators, non-traditional forms of evaluation can nonetheless create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency.

Một số từ vựng và cấu trúc tương đương:

• Nevertheless (B2) tuy nhiên, mặc dù
  Ví dụ:  The continuous assessment method requires arduous work from both students and educators. Nevertheless, it can create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency.

• Still (B1) mặc dù vậy
  Ví dụ: Despite requiring arduous work from both students and educators, non-traditional forms of evaluation can still create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency.

• (And) yet (B1) mặc dù vậy
  Ví dụ: The continuous assessment method requires arduous work from both students and educators and yet it can create positive effects on students’ academic efficiency.

Notwithstanding

Cấu trúc:

Level: C1.

Nghĩa Tiếng Anh: despite the fact or thing mentioned (Dịch: bất chấp những điều đã đề cập trước đó).

Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: Mặc dù, bất chấp.

Ví dụ:

• Notwithstanding the stated merits, continuous assessment methods have drawn some criticism. (Dịch: Mặc dù có những ưu điểm nêu trên, các hình thức đánh giá thường xuyên vẫn nhận về một số chỉ trích.)

• The stated merits notwithstanding, continuous assessment methods have drawn some criticism.

Whereas

Level: B2.

Nghĩa Tiếng Anh: compared with the fact that; but (Dịch: so sánh với thực tế đó là, nhưng mà).

Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: Trong khi đó, nhưng mà.

Ví dụ:

• He enjoys hanging out, whereas she prefers to stay at home. (Dịch: Anh ấy thích đi chơi, trong khi đó cô ấy thích ở nhà.)

• Whereas he enjoys hanging out, she prefers to stay at home. (Dịch: Trong khi anh ấy thích đi chơi thì cô ấy thích ở nhà.)

Một số từ vựng và cấu trúc tương đương:

• While (B2) trong khi đó
  Ví dụ:  While he enjoys hanging out, she prefers to stay at home. (Dịch: Trong khi anh ấy thích đi chơi thì cô ấy thích ở nhà.)

Lưu ý:

• - KHÔNG dùng “Whereas” để nối 2 câu độc lập.
  Ví dụ: He enjoys hanging out. Whereas, she prefers to stay at home. 

• - KHÔNG dùng “Whereas” that cho “While” với nghĩa chỉ thời gian.
  Ví dụ: 

  • Đúng: While he was in the middle of the meeting, his wife called. (Dịch: Trong lúc ông ấy đang họp, vợ ông ấy gọi điện đến.)

  • Sai: Whereas he was in the middle of the meeting, his wife called.

On the other hand

Nghĩa Tiếng Anh: in a way that is different from the first thing you mentioned (Dịch: theo một cách trái ngược với những gì đã đề cập trước đó).

Nghĩa Tiếng Việt: Mặt khác.

Ví dụ:

On the other hand, continuous assessment methods have drawn more attention by virtue of their merits. (Dịch: Mặt khác, các hình thức đánh giá thường xuyên đang dần được chú ý hơn.)

Lưu ý:

On the one hand - On the other hand: Một mặt, mặt khác (Đây là cặp cấu trúc có thể sử dụng để chỉ sự tương phản của hai đối tượng, ý kiến,…)

Ví dụ:

• On the one hand, online learning may provide both students and educators with numerous merits. (Dịch: Một mặt, học online có thể đem lại cho cả học sinh và giáo viên rất nhiều những lợi ích.)

• On the other hand, face-to-face classes can be enormously beneficial to education. (Dịch: Mặt khác, các lớp học offline sẽ có lợi ích to lớn đối với nền giáo dục.)

While websites are claimed to have drastically facilitated the way citizens access information, the opponents argue that they disturb the world’s stability. This essay will discuss both viewpoints and demonstrate the author’s perspective.

On the one hand, it is justifiable that the Internet has been enormously beneficial for creating a free and democratic society. First, they allow every individual to fully utilize their  freedom of speech. Specifically, people are able to  express themselves openly without fear of persecution. By evaluating different and even opposing perspectives, everyone is able to view an issue from multiple angles, which enhance their critical thinking. Additionally, the Internet also contributes to building a more effective and less expensive space for people to exchange knowledge. Modern people are now not depending on media corporations that dictate their news, entertainment, and information. With the assistance of the internet and technology, they are capable of updating news from all over the world. 

Notwithstanding the stated merits, web content involves numerous potential risks. First, it can be the case where the freedom of speech is abused for antisocial purposes. With a clone account, an anonymous person will be able to spread distorted information about the policy of the government, hence serious riots and other detrimental consequences. Besides, online platforms will make it easy for anyone to commit cybercrime. This can be seen from an incredible number of frauds that take place in virtual spaces.

In conclusion, despite tremendous benefits, websites can nonetheless pose serious threats to users and the whole society in general. Therefore, I firmly subscribe to the view it is the individual's responsibility to utilize it for positive purposes.
