Context | Today I will talk about the time that a friend of mine and I walked throughout the city. My family moved from the countryside into the city a few years ago, and at that time I really didn’t understand the area at all. A few days after having started school, I mentioned this to a classmate and they offered to show me around the neighborhood. |
Content | That weekend we took our backpacks, filled them up with some water bottles and snacks and set off. As we left our immediate neighborhood we chatted and he told me all about the area, how old some of the buildings were, and some of the notable people on my block. As we got farther and farther from our houses, he knew less and less details about the area, but we never ran out of things to talk about. My city has many lakes all across it, and so whenever we would come upon a new lake, we would find somewhere comfortable in the shade to take a seat. We would eat some of our snacks and drink our water. We often checked where we were on the map on our phones, and by doing this we traced a large circle through the city, and it eventually brought us back to our neighborhood without ever bringing us to the same spot twice. The whole day was enjoyable and the only costs to us to do so were the price of some water bottles and a couple of snacks. |
Conclusion | It was a lot of fun, it was good exercise, and it helped me become much more comfortable in my new home city. |

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Sample
What do you think will matter on a day out (weather, people, etc)?
All of these things matter, but depending on the combination they may not matter. For instance, the weather is a very important consideration when planning a day outside of the house. This may turn out to be less of a concern though if say, your friend group decides it will actually be a lot of fun to play football in the rainstorm.
combination /ˌkɒmbɪˈneɪʃn/ (n): sự kết hợp
Ex: The tragedy was due to a combination of factors.
Rainstorm /ˈreɪnstɔːm/ (n): mưa bão
Ex: We drove for five hours through a rainstorm.
How is going out with your friends and going out alone different?
It is certainly very different going out alone or with friends. When going out alone, the only person that you need to consider keeping occupied and interested is yourself. When going out with other people, even your friends, it should be important to keep their interests in mind while doing so. This also comes with the benefit of having friends around you that you can rely on, if something does not go according to plan.
occupied /ˈɒkjupaɪd/(a): bận rộn
Ex: We need something to keep the children occupied.
Is money a matter of concern on a day out?
I would think that it shouldn’t be, but in a world so governed by money it is difficult to see how it would not be. I try and not put too much focus on money at any given time, especially while doing anything that I would consider social. This though, has led to occasions when I over spend, or even times when people have taken advantage of me being willing to spend money so that they don’t have to.
Govern /ˈɡʌvn/(v) : quản lí, kiểm soát, chi phối
Ex: Prices are governed by market demand.
taken advantage /ˈteɪkən ədˈvɑːntɪʤ/ (n): Tận dụng, lợi dụng
Ex: If he was going to take advantage of her, he certainly would have done it before now.
Do you think technology impacts the decision to have outdoor activities?
Technology definitely impacts decisions to go outdoors for activities, but in both good and bad ways. For instance, I can go out and be confident that I will not get lost as I can always check my location on my phone. I can also easily find entertaining things to do while out with a quick internet search. There is the potential negative impacts though, and that would be that people can feel less inclined to go out at all if they want to just sit with their phone or computer for the day.
Entertaining /ˌentəˈteɪnɪŋ/ (a): mang tính giải trí
Ex: I found the talk both informative and entertaining.
Potential /pəˈtenʃl/ (a): tiềm tàng
Ex: First we need to identify actual and potential problems.
