Giới thiệu về từ chỉ sự hiểu biết trong IELTS Writing Task 2

Trong bài thi IELTS Writing, “understand” là một từ phổ biến, thường được sử dụng để thể hiện sự hiểu biết về một vấn đề hay tình hống nào đó. Tuy nhiên việc lặp lại từ này trong bài quá nhiều khiến bài làm không đạt được điểm cao. Do vậy, việc biết thêm những từ để paraphrase cho “understand” là việc vô cùng cần thiết khi luyện tập viết bất cứ chủ đề Writing nào.

Những cụm từ thay thế cho “Understand” phổ biến trong IELTS Writing Task 2

Comprehend

Từ điển Cambridge định nghĩa từ “comprehend” là “to understand something completely” (từ vựng cấp độ C2). Theo Merriam Webster, “comprehend” là từ thường xuyên được dùng để thay thế cho “understand”.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Hiểu bản chất hay ý nghĩa đầy đủ của một thứ gì đó.

Văn cảnh sử dụng: Theo Oxford,

• Từ comprehend thường được sử dụng trong câu phủ định

• Từ comprehend được dùng để chỉ hành động hiểu một sự thật (fact), một ý tưởng (idea), hoặc một lý do (reason)

• Từ comprehend có thể dùng như sau:

  • Comprehend + wh-words + Subject + Verb 

  • Comprehend + that + Subject + Verb 

  • Comprehend + Noun 

  • Comprehend + the point/idea (of something)

Ví dụ: Many individuals fail to comprehend why governments are not implementing stricter regulations to combat plastic pollution. (Nhiều cá nhân không hiểu tại sao các chính phủ không thực hiện các quy định chặt chẽ hơn để chống ô nhiễm nhựa.)

Phân tích ví dụ: Câu muốn truyền tải việc nhiều người không thể hiểu được lý do của vấn đề. Do vậy, với những câu thể hiện ý nghĩa phủ định, từ “comprehend” sẽ mang sắc thái nghĩa đầy đủ.

Grasp

Theo từ điển Cambridge, “grasp”  có nghĩa là “to understand something, especially something difficult” (từ vựng cấp độ C2). Trong khi đó, Oxford định nghĩa Grasp là “to understand something completely”.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Hiểu hoàn toàn điều gì đó, đặc biệt là những điều phức tạp, khó hiểu.

Văn cảnh sử dụng: Theo Oxford,

• Có thể sử dụng “grasp” thay cho “understand” khi chỉ hành động nhận ra ý nghĩa hoặc tầm quan trọng của điều gì đó lần đầu tiên. Tuy nhiên, chỉ có từ “understand” mới được dùng để chỉ hành động hiểu ngôn ngữ, từ ngữ, văn bản. Ví dụ, cách sử dụng từ “grasp” sau đây là sai: “He cam grasp Chinese after 10 months of learning” hay “They grasp the instructions easily”

• Từ “Grasp” được dùng khi muốn thể hiện ý nghĩa hiểu rõ một việc/ vấn đề phức tạp

• Từ grasp có thể dùng như sau:

  • Grasp + wh-words + Subject + Verb 

  • Grasp + that + Subject + Verb 

  • Grasp + Noun 

  • Grasp + the point/idea (of something)

Ví dụ: In order to make informed decisions about healthcare policy, policymakers must grasp the economic implications of different healthcare systems and their impact on accessibility and affordability. (Để đưa ra quyết định sáng suốt về chính sách chăm sóc sức khỏe, các nhà hoạch định chính sách phải nắm bắt được ý nghĩa kinh tế của các hệ thống chăm sóc sức khỏe khác nhau và tác động của chúng đối với khả năng tiếp cận và khả năng chi trả.)

Phân tích ví dụ: Như đã đề cập, grasp thường được dùng để chỉ việc hiểu những thứ điều phức tạp. Trong câu này, đối tượng được nhắc đến là những ý nghĩa kinh tế của các hệ thông chăm sóc sức khỏe - đây cũng là một vấn đề phức tạp, đòi hỏi sự nghiên cứu. Do vậy, từ grasp đã được sử dụng phù hợp về ngữ cảnh trong câu trên.

Digest

Theo từ điển Cambridge, “Digest” có nghĩa là “to read or hear new information and take the necessary time to understand it” (từ vựng cấp độ C2), trong khi đó, từ điển Collins định nghĩa từ này là “think about something carefully so that you understand it”.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Mất thời gian suy nghĩ kĩ, để hiểu một điều gì đó mới mẻ.

Văn cảnh sử dụng: Từ “Digest” được sử dụng khi muốn mô tả việc suy thật kĩ một hiện tượng mới mẻ để hiễu rõ được nó.

Ví dụ: It is important for students to take the time to digest the key concepts presented in their textbooks in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the subject matter. (Điều quan trọng là học sinh phải dành thời gian để lĩnh hội các khái niệm chính được trình bày trong sách giáo khoa để hiểu sâu hơn về chủ đề.)

Phân tích ví dụ: Như đã đề cập, “digest” được dùng để chỉ việc suy nghĩ kĩ, để hiểu một điều gì đó mới mẻ. Những kiến thức được đề cập trong sách giáo khoa là những thông tin mới, được phổ cập cho học sinh, do vậy, từ “digest” được sử dụng trong ngữ cảnh này là hợp lý.

Appreciate

Theo từ điển Cambridge,  “Appreciate” có nghĩa là “to understand a situation and realize that it is important” (từ vựng cấp độ C2) (hiểu tình huống và biết được rằng nó quan trọng). Oxford cũng đưa ra định nghĩa về từ này như sau “to understand that something is true” (biết điều gì là sự thật).

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Hiểu bản chất, giá trị, chất lượng hoặc ý nghĩa của cái gì.

Văn cảnh sử dụng: Theo Oxford,

• Từ “Appreciate” không được sử dụng trong các thì tiếp diễn

• Từ Appreciate có thể được dùng như sau:

  • Grasp + wh-words + Subject + Verb 

  • Grasp + that + Subject + Verb 

  • Grasp + Noun 

Ví dụ: It is crucial for individuals to appreciate the significance of cultural diversity in fostering social harmony (Điều quan trọng là các cá nhân phải hiểu được tầm quan trọng của sự đa dạng văn hóa trong việc thúc đẩy sự hòa hợp xã hội).

Phân tích ví dụ: “Appreciate” mang nét nghĩa của việc hiểu được giá trị, ý nghĩa, tầm quan trọng. Ví dụ trên đang đề cập đến việc “hiểu được tầm quan trọng của sự đa dạng văn hóa”. Do vậy, từ “Appreciate” là phù hợp để sử dụng trong ngữ cảnh này.

Decipher

Theo từ điển Collins,  “Decipher” có nghĩa là “to discover the meaning of (anything obscure or difficult to trace or understand”. Ngoài ra, “to discover the meaning of something written badly”.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: 

• Giải mã ý nghĩa của một thứ mơ hồ, khó hiểu

• Cố đọc hiểu văn bản bị viết ngoáy, viết xấu

Văn cảnh sử dụng: Sử dụng từ “decipher” khi vật cần được hiểu đang ở trạng thái ẩn ý, cần được giải mã.

Ví dụ: When confronted with complex scientific data, researchers must employ their analytical skills to decipher the underlying patterns and extract meaningful insights. (Khi đối mặt với dữ liệu khoa học phức tạp, các nhà nghiên cứu phải sử dụng kỹ năng phân tích của mình để hiểu các quy luật cơ bản và rút ra những thông tin giá trị).

Phân tích ví dụ: “Decipher” thường được dùng để nói về việc giải mã. Câu ví dụ đang muốn nói đến việc phân tích dữ liệu để rút ra kết luận. Do vậy, từ “decipher” được sử dụng cung cấp nét nghĩa đầy đủ của câu.

Discern

Theo từ điển Cambridge, “Discern” có nghĩa là “to see, recognize, or understand something that is not clear”.

Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Hiểu một điều gì đó, đặc biệt là những điều không rõ ràng.

Văn cảnh sử dụng: Sử dụng từ “Discern” khi vật cần được hiểu, đang ở trạng thái không rõ ràng.

• Từ Appreciate có thể được dùng như sau:

  • Discern + wh-words + Subject + Verb 

  • Discern + that + Subject + Verb 

  • Discern + Noun 

Ví dụ: By carefully analyzing the data, one can discern the underlying trends and patterns that reveal the impact of climate change on global ecosystems. (Bằng cách phân tích cẩn thận dữ liệu, người ta có thể nhận ra các xu hướng và quy luật cho thấy tác động của biến đổi khí hậu đối với hệ sinh thái toàn cầu.)

Phân tích ví dụ: “Discern” có nghĩa là “hiểu/ biết điều gì không rõ ràng”. Câu trên đang nhắc đến những “underlying trends and patterns” là các xu hướng và quy luật khó có thể nhận ra ngay từ lúc đầu. Do vậy, “Discern” là từ phù hợp để dùng trong ngữ cảnh này.

Thanks to the advancements in video technology, it has become increasingly convenient to grasp how people from different countries live. Nevertheless, I would argue that while videos are an immensely useful tool, written documents hold an equally valuable position in educating individuals about the customs and culture of others.

To begin with, videos offer multiple avenues for discerning how people around the world live. Watching a video is not only easier than reading, but it is also visually captivating and engaging. Whether it's a film, a documentary, or a short clip on platforms like YouTube, videos provide a highly stimulating and interesting approach to learning, utilizing both visual imagery and audio. Furthermore, the internet has made a vast array of video content available to most people, enabling them to learn about various subjects, including the customs and cultures of different societies.

However, written documents such as books, magazines, newspapers, and online articles remain excellent sources of educational material. Scientific studies have demonstrated that reading is a more effective method of comprehension compared to watching videos, particularly when it comes to retaining specific information. Therefore, as an educational tool, reading may be superior. Additionally, books often offer more reliable information compared to what is found in videos. The production, publication, and printing of a book involve considerable cost and time, resulting in well-researched and dependable content, unlike a significant portion of the content found in online videos today.

In conclusion, I disagree that videos are a superior means of learning about the lives of people worldwide. However, I do acknowledge that videos serve as an effective learning tool, while emphasizing the enduring value of written documents in understanding the customs and cultures of others.
