Ngữ pháp của Anh – Anh và Anh – Mỹ có gì khác biệt? – Phần 1

Trong số 1,2 tỉ người sử dụng tiếng Anh như là ngôn ngữ mẹ đẻ hoặc ngôn ngữ thứ hai (Duffin, 2020) thì không hề có dạng tiếng Anh nào có tầm ảnh hưởng lớn như là Anh – Anh và Anh – Mỹ. Tuy tầm quan trọng của chúng là vậy nhưng nhiều người nói vẫn không thể phân biệt rõ ràng được ngữ pháp của chúng khác nhau ra sao. Điều này có thể dẫn đến hiện tượng bối rối khi người đọc gặp phải một câu tưởng như sai ngữ pháp hoặc không hợp lý, trong khi nó lại chỉ là cách hành văn phổ biến trong một dạng tiếng Anh. Để giúp đỡ người đọc trong việc phân biệt giữa hai loại tiếng Anh trên, bài viết sau đây sẽ liệt kê một số khác biệt lớn nhất giữa tiếng Anh – Anh và Anh – Mỹ, với ví dụ lấy trực tiếp từ các văn bản có giọng văn tương ứng với từng loại tiếng Anh trên.

Nguồn tham khảo và cách viết tắt

Do bài viết trên chủ yếu chỉ tham khảo một vài nguồn cố định xuyên suốt cả bài nên tác giả sẽ dùng ký hiệu để chỉ những nguồn đó. Điều này là để người đọc có thể dễ dàng phân biệt được nguồn hơn, cũng như là để câu văn ngắn gọn và dễ theo dõi hơn.

Các thì động từ

Thì hiện tại hoàn thành

Những người sử dụng ngôn ngữ Anh – Anh thì thường sử dụng thì hiện tại hoàn thành hơn Anh – Mỹ (C) (MM) (BC). Cụ thể thì cả ngôn ngữ Anh – Anh và Anh – Mỹ đều sử dụng thì hiện tại hoàn thành để nói về một hoạt động diễn ra ở quá khứ nhưng đang kéo dài tới hiện tại. Tuy nhiên thì Anh – Mỹ có xu hướng sử dụng quá khứ đơn nếu người sử dụng coi rằng hoạt động đó đã kết thúc trước thời điểm nói (BC).

Thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Ngược lại thì quá khứ hoàn thành được sử dụng nhiều hơn trong Anh-Mỹ, đặc biệt là khi người đọc muốn miêu tả một hành động xảy ra trước hành động khác trong quá khứ. Trong Anh-Anh thì người nói thường sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn để diễn đạt ý này (C).

Các động từ

Động từ số nhiều/số ít đi kèm với danh từ chỉ tập hợp

Trong Anh – Anh thì không có sự nhất quán nào trong việc dùng động từ số nhiều hoặc số ít để chỉ những danh từ tâp hợp. Tuy nhiên thì trong Anh – Mỹ, những danh từ chỉ tập hợp hầu như luôn đứng trước động từ số ít (BC).
