Exercise 1: The line graph shows the percentage of New Zealand population from 1950 to 2050. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph illustrates the percentage of 4 different ages in total population in New Zealand from 1950 and the predicted figures by 2050
In general, the figures for people from 38-45 and 0-14 enjoyed upswings while that of people from 25-37 and over 65 underwent downturns. It is worth highlighting that those aged 65 and plus were always the sector with the highest proportions of total population in New Zealand, which continues to be true in the 2050.
From 1950 to 1990, 60 percent of those from the oldest group tripled the percentage of people aged 25 to 37 in the first year..Then the former saw a marginal growth to nearly 70% over 4 decades while the latter increased to about 25% in 1960 before declining to 18% in the same period. Meanwhile, the percentage of the 38-to-45-year-old population started at 21% in 1950 and rose sharply to roughly 48% in the next 40 years. In contrast, the figures for those from the youngest group remained unchanged at 9% between 1950 and 1990.
After peaking at 70% in 1990, the proportion of the oldest group is predicted to drop to 55% by 2050. The figure for those from 25-37 years of age experienced a similar trend and will also decline to 1% by 2050. On the other hand, since 1990, the percentage of people aged 0 to 14 has experienced a steady rise and is predicted to reach 20% in 2050. Finally, the figures for people aged 38 to 45 is expected to go down to nearly 40% in the end.
