The line graph highlights the information about the percentage of people aged 65 and over in three distinct countries, namely Japan, Sweden, and the USA from 1940 to 2040. From an overall perspective, what stands out from the graph is that all three countries witness a gradual increase throughout the period. Another striking thing is that the figure for Japan is the lowest for most of the studied period.
Turning to the details, in 1940, Japan had the smallest proportion of elderly individuals at 5%, in comparison to about 7% and 9% in Sweden and the USA, respectively. In the next 50 years, there was a significant rise in the percentage of the elderly population in both Sweden and the USA to roughly 15%, whereas the figure for Japan reached the lowest point at approximately 4%.
Looking into the future, it is predicted that Japan's elderly population will see a dramatic surge and peak at 27% between 2030 and 2040, up from 10%. Moreover, the same trend will also be seen in the USA and Sweden, with percentages increasing from around 16% and 18% to just under 25% and 25%, respectively
