Key takeaways

Dạng bài Words in Context trong Digital SAT

  • Điền từ vào chỗ trống: Câu hỏi thường có dạng "Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?" [1][2].

  • Tìm nghĩa của từ: Câu hỏi thường có dạng "As used in the text, what does the word 'x' most nearly mean?" [1][2]. Dạng bài này chỉ xuất hiện với thể loại đoạn văn Poem/Novel/Short story.

Chiến lược làm bài Words in Context trong Digital SAT

Exercise 3: Matching sentence halves

Match the first half of each sentence in Column A with its logically matching second half in Column B to complete the sentence.

1. The company promised to be more transparent about its finances,…

A. ……back to a small group of infected animals.

2. Scientists could trace the disease…

B. …that the reported side effects were not simply due to chance.

3. Newspapers reported the storm's damage as a huge exaggeration,…

C. …until it was nothing more than a faint smudge against the horizon.

4. The teacher's directions were straightforward,…

D. …since only a few trees had actually fallen.

5. Forensic accountants determined that the pattern of falsified invoices was undeniable…

E. …revealing structural cracks that had gone unnoticed for weeks.

6. The eyewitness account was so vague…

F. …so it began publishing detailed reports every month.

7. Before releasing the drug to the public, researchers spent years verifying…

G. …that detectives could not even confirm whether the suspect had been alone.

8. Unlike his predecessor, who preferred backroom negotiations, the new director expressed his objections overtly…

H. …once the same fabricated vendor number appeared across three separate departments.

9. As the ship drifted further from shore, the coastline grew increasingly indistinct…

I. …interrupting the meeting to challenge the proposal in front of the entire board.

10. Only after the storm passed did the true extent of the damage manifest itself,…

J. …so every student finished the task without asking questions.

Key:

1–F (Being transparent about finances means sharing detailed information openly, matching regular published reports.)

2–A (Tracing a disease means finding its original source.)

3–D (Calling something an exaggeration means the real damage was much smaller than reported.)

4–J (Straightforward directions are clear enough that no one needs to ask questions.)

5–H (Evidence becomes undeniable once the same fabricated detail is found repeated independently in multiple places — a pattern too consistent to be coincidence.)

6–G (A vague account is confirmed by what it fails to establish — here, even a basic fact like the suspect being alone.)

7–B (Verifying results specifically means ruling out chance as an explanation for the observed effects.)

8–I (Overt behavior is defined by open, public confrontation — interrupting a meeting — in contrast to private negotiation.)

9–C (Indistinct describes a form that has lost definition, reduced to a faint, shapeless mark.)

10–E (Something manifesting itself means previously hidden damage becomes visible and known.)

Exercise 4: SAT contextual word choice

Read each sentence carefully. Choose the most precise and logical word from the bracketed options [ Option A / Option B ] to complete the sentence based on its academic context.

1. Over the past decade, new resistant strains of bacteria have begun to [ emerge / manifest ] in hospital settings, representing organisms not previously documented anywhere.

2. Archaeologists were able to [ trace / track ] the migration patterns of ancient tribes by studying pottery fragments scattered across the region.

3. To help students grasp the treaty's significance, the professor deliberately [ emphasized / exaggerated ] its role in three separate lectures, though the facts themselves remained accurate.

4. The instructions for assembling the furniture were surprisingly [ straightforward / elaborate ], requiring only three simple steps.

5. Government agencies are expected to remain [ transparent / opaque ] about how public funds are allocated each fiscal year.

6. Whether the new policy will actually reduce costs remains highly [ debatable / undeniable ], with economists offering sharply conflicting projections.

7. The lab report provided [ precise / vague ] measurements accurate to the nearest millimeter, leaving no room for misinterpretation.

8. Before publishing the article, the editor insisted on [ verifying / assuming ] every fact with an independent source.

9. Rather than stating his objections directly, the advisor [ subtly / overtly ] hinted at his concerns through carefully chosen questions.

10. Through the thick morning fog, the shapes of the buildings appeared [ indistinct / conspicuous ], blurring into the gray sky.

Key:

1. emerge (Context describes organisms coming into existence for the first time, not an existing condition becoming visible, which is what "manifest" would imply.)

2. trace (Refers to reconstructing a historical path from indirect evidence, distinct from "track," which implies following something as it happens in real time.)

3.  emphasized (The facts "remained accurate," so the professor stressed their importance without distorting them, ruling out "exaggerated.")

4. straightforward (The phrase "only three simple steps" confirms simplicity, ruling out "elaborate.")

5. transparent (Public accountability requires openness; "opaque" would contradict the expectation described.)

6.  debatable (Conflicting projections and lack of expert consensus indicate the outcome is open to dispute, not beyond doubt.)

7.  precise (Accuracy to the nearest millimeter reflects exactness, the opposite of vagueness.)

8. verifying (Checking facts against an independent source is a deliberate confirmation process, not an assumption.)

9. subtly (Hinting indirectly through questions, rather than stating objections outright, reflects a subtle rather than open approach.)

10. indistinct (Blurring into the sky indicates the shapes were unclear, the opposite of "conspicuous.")
