Unless là gì?

Unless là một liên từ trong tiếng Anh mang nghĩa “nếu không”, “trừ khi”[1], là cấu trúc thường được sử dụng để thay thế If…not trong câu điều kiện giúp câu văn ngắn gọn hơn.

Ví dụ:

• You'll be late unless you leave now. = You’ll be late if you don’t leave now. (Bạn sẽ muộn giờ nếu bạn không đi ngay bây giờ.)

Câu điều kiện loại 1

Lưu ý khi sử dụng Unless

Không sử dụng ở dạng phủ định

Bản thân từ Unless đã mang nghĩa phủ định (= “If not”), nên chỉ được sử dụng ở dạng khẳng định. Việc mệnh đề theo sau Unless được viết ở dạng phủ định sẽ làm sai lệch ý nghĩa của câu, tạo ra “phủ định kép”.

Ví dụ:

• Unless it’s not important, don’t call me. (Không chính xác)

  → Unless it's important, don't call me. (Trừ khi đó là việc quan trọng, đừng gọi cho tôi.)

Không sử dụng trong câu hỏi

Unless thường không được sử dụng trong câu hỏi. Thay vào đó, hãy sử dụng “If…not”.

Ví dụ:

• Will you watch TV unless you finish your homework? (Không chính xác)

  → Will you watch TV if you don’t finish your homework? (Bạn có xem TV không nếu bạn không hoàn thành bài tập về nhà?)

Dấu phẩy và vị trí mệnh đề

Mệnh đề chứa Unless đứng ở đầu câu được ngăn cách với mệnh đề chính bằng dấu phẩy.

Ví dụ:

• Unless the rain stops, we won't go outside. (Trừ khi tạnh mưa, chúng ta sẽ không ra ngoài.)

Mệnh đề chứa Unless đứng sau mệnh đề chính thì không cần dùng dấu phẩy để ngăn cách.

Ví dụ: We can't start the meeting unless everyone is here. (Chúng ta không thể bắt đầu cuộc họp nếu không có mặt đầy đủ mọi người ở đây.)

Các câu hỏi thường gặp về bài tập Unless

Unless có luôn bằng If not không?

Unless không phải lúc nào cũng bằng If not. "Unless” = “if…not” khi điều kiện phủ định đóng vai trò là ngoại lệ của mệnh đề chính. Nếu “if not” là một phần của cấu trúc logic khác thì không thể thay thế chúng với nhau.

Ví dụ:

• The concert was spectacular, if not life-changing. (Buổi hòa nhạc thật ngoạn mục, nếu không muốn nói là thay đổi cuộc đời.)

“If not” trong trường hợp trên dùng để nhấn mạnh sự tuyệt vời của buổi hòa nhạc, tăng cao trào cho câu. Nếu thay thế “if not” bằng “unless” thì ý nghĩa của câu sẽ hoàn toàn bị sai lệch.

• The concert was spectacular, unless life-changing. (Buổi hòa nhạc sẽ thật tuyệt vời nếu nó không thay đổi cuộc đời bạn.)

Có dùng not sau Unless không?

Không dùng not sau Unless. Unless vốn dĩ đã mang nghĩa phủ định, nên mệnh đề theo sau nó phải luôn được dùng ở dạng khẳng định nếu không muốn gây ra phủ định kép.

Unless dùng được trong câu điều kiện loại 2 và 3 không?

Unless dùng được trong cả câu điều kiện loại 1, 2 và 3.

Ví dụ:

Loại 2: Unless it rained, the plants wouldn't grow. (Trừ khi trời mưa, cây cối sẽ không thể phát triển được.)

Loại 3: She wouldn't have gotten the job unless she had prepared so well. (Cô ấy đã không thể có được công việc đó nếu không chuẩn bị thật kỹ lưỡng.)

Khi đổi If sang Unless cần đổi gì?

Khi muốn đổi một câu từ If sang Unless mà không làm thay đổi nghĩa của câu, người học có thể làm theo các bước sau:

1. Thay “If” bằng “Unless”.

2. Bỏ “not” trong mệnh đề chứa “If”.

3. Chia lại động từ chính trong mệnh đề chứa “If” thành thể khẳng định phù hợp với thì của câu.

4. Giữ nguyên mệnh đề chính (vế còn lại của câu).

Ví dụ:

• If she doesn’t have enough money, she will never make it to Paris. (Nếu cô ấy không có đủ tiền, cô sẽ không bao giờ tới được Paris.)

  → Unless she has enough money, she will never make it to Paris.
