Key takeaways

Dạng bài Words in Context trong Digital SAT

  • Điền từ vào chỗ trống: Câu hỏi thường có dạng "Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?" [1][2].

  • Tìm nghĩa của từ: Câu hỏi thường có dạng "As used in the text, what does the word 'x' most nearly mean?" [1][2]. Dạng bài này chỉ xuất hiện với thể loại đoạn văn Poem/Novel/Short story.

Chiến lược làm bài Words in Context trong Digital SAT

Exercise 3: Matching Sentence Halves

Match the first half of each sentence in Column A (1 - 12) with its logically matching second half in Column B (A - L) to complete the sentence.

1. After standardizing the units and sampling methods, the researchers determined that the two datasets were sufficiently comparable, ...

A. ...because one identifies large-scale patterns while the other explains the individual factors behind those patterns.

2. As more social and economic variables were added to the model, its complexity...

B. … which allowed the researchers to compare changes in income across the two populations using the same statistical standards.

3. Rather than exposing volunteers to the dangerous conditions of the experiment, the researchers simulated...

C. ...as it contained particles of nearly identical size and chemical composition throughout the sample.

4. A serious contradiction appeared in the report when the authors claimed that the treatment had no effect...

D. ...made it increasingly difficult to determine which variable was responsible for a particular change in the predicted outcome.

5. To help first-year students understand the unfamiliar concept, the professor used an analogy...

E. ...because the study was examining participants' ability to recall information after reading scientific texts.

6. When one measurement differed dramatically from every other observation, the researchers initially regarded it as an oddity... .

F. ...the movement of toxic particles through the water supply under several possible contamination scenarios.

7. The review committee comprises specialists in biology, statistics, and environmental science...

G. ...includes numerous tiny components that must interact in a precise sequence for the device to function correctly.

8. Because the researchers collected all the samples from the same uncontaminated region, the material was relatively homogeneous...

H. ...because both groups reported that access to reliable public transportation was an important factor in their daily lives.

9. Although the machine looks simple from a distance, its intricate internal structure...

I. ...referring to the way an electrical circuit transfers current, since both systems involve movement through a connected pathway.

10. Data on participants' favorite sports were considered irrelevant...

J. ...but stated that the same treatment significantly improved performance in another section of the study.

11. Despite their differences in age and education, the two groups showed one important commonality...

K. ...so the committee could evaluate the issue from several disciplinary perspectives rather than relying on a single field.

12. The two methods are complementary rather than competing approaches...

L. ...but repeated tests showed that the unusual value resulted from a temporary calibration error in the measuring device.

Key:

1. B (Comparable datasets can be evaluated using the same standards after differences in measurement methods have been controlled.)

2. D (Greater complexity means that many interacting variables make individual effects harder to identify.)

3. F (A simulation reproduces potentially real conditions without requiring researchers to expose participants to those conditions.)

4. J (A contradiction occurs when two claims or findings in the same study conflict with each other.)

5. I (An analogy explains an unfamiliar idea by comparing it with a more familiar system or process.)

6. L (An oddity is an unusual result that may initially appear to be an exceptional case but can have another explanation.)

7. K (A committee comprises the people or groups that make up the committee.)

8. C (Homogeneous material has a relatively uniform composition throughout.)

9. G (An intricate structure contains many small, interconnected parts arranged in a complicated way.)

10. E (Irrelevant information has no meaningful connection to the research question being investigated.)

11. H (A commonality is a characteristic shared by different people or groups.)

12. A (Complementary approaches contribute different but mutually useful forms of information to the same investigation.)

Exercise 4: SAT contextual word choice

Read each sentence carefully. Choose the most precise and logical word from the bracketed options [ Option A / Option B ] to complete the sentence based on its academic context.

1. Because the two datasets were collected using identical sampling procedures and measurement criteria, their results are directly [ comparable / accidental ].

2. Before testing the proposed intervention, the researchers used a computer program to [ simulate / estimate ] how different treatment levels might affect the spread of the disease.

3. The article contains a fundamental [ contradiction / assumption ]: it claims that the policy had no measurable effect while later presenting evidence of a substantial decline in inequality.

4. The researchers attempted to [ reconstruct / complexify ] the historical population from incomplete census records and archival documents.

5. Because nearly all participants had similar educational, professional, and socioeconomic backgrounds, the sample was relatively [ homogeneous / representative ].

6. The professor used a detailed diagram to [ illustrate / analogize ] the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

7. Despite differences in methodology, the two studies identified an important [ commonality / distinction ]: both found that early educational support was associated with improved academic outcomes.

8. The two measurement techniques are [ complementary / identical ], since one provides precise numerical data while the other offers detailed qualitative information.

9. The report [ comprises / summarizes ] six sections addressing the study's theoretical framework, methodology, findings, and implications.

10. The exceptionally low measurement was initially regarded as an [ oddity / indicator ], but repeated observations suggested that it reflected a consistent feature of the population.

11. The procedure was sufficiently [ straightforward / intricate ] that researchers could complete the analysis without specialized training.

12. Information about participants' childhood entertainment preferences was considered [ irrelevant / predictive ] to the study of their current voting behavior.

Key:

1. comparable (Context refers to results that can be meaningfully compared because identical sampling and measurement procedures were used; "accidental" refers to something occurring by chance rather than through a systematic process).

2. simulate (Context refers to reproducing a possible real-world process in a computer model under controlled conditions; "estimate" refers to calculating an approximate value).

3. contradiction (Context refers to two claims within the article that conflict with each other; "assumption" refers to a belief accepted as true without direct proof).

4. reconstruct (Context refers to recreating a historical population from incomplete evidence; "complexify" refers to the act of making things more complex).

5. homogeneous (Context refers to a sample whose members share similar characteristics in several important respects; "representative" refers to accurately reflecting the characteristics of a larger population).

6. illustrate (Context refers to making the relationship between variables clearer through a diagram; "analogize" refers to explaining something by comparing it with another thing).

7. commonality (Context refers to a feature or finding shared by both studies; "distinction" refers to an important difference between things).

8. complementary (Context refers to two methods that provide different but mutually useful forms of information; "identical" refers to things that are exactly the same).

9. comprises (Context refers to the six sections that together make up the report; "summarizes" refers to presenting the main points in a shorter form).

10. oddity (Context refers to an observation initially considered unusual or unexpected; "indicator" refers to something that provides evidence of a particular condition or trend).

11. straightforward (Context refers to a procedure that is simple and easy to follow; "intricate" refers to something involving many interconnected or complicated elements).

12. irrelevant (Context refers to information that has no meaningful connection to the research question; "predictive" refers to information that helps forecast a future outcome).
