Word form là một trong những điểm ngữ pháp nền tảng giúp người học linh hoạt hơn trong môi trường sử dụng tiếng Anh. Đặc biệt, Word form là dạng bài thường xuyên xuất hiện trong các đề thi tuyển sinh lớp 10 và chiếm phần điểm khá lớn. Tóm tắt lý thuyết Word form trong tiếng Anh

Word form (hoặc Word formation) là cách thay đổi hình thức khác nhau của một gốc từ, thay đổi chúng để phù hợp với ngữ pháp trong câu. Chúng dựa vào các từ loại (parts of speech) để biến đổi theo tương ứng.

Ví dụ: 

• Danh từ: beauty

• Động từ: beautify

• Tính từ: beautiful

• Trạng từ: beautifully

1) She is a beautiful girl. (Cô ấy là một cô gái xinh đẹp.) → Trong câu cần tính từ để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ "girl".

2) She sings beautifully. (Cô ấy hát một cách hay.) → Câu cần một trạng từ để bổ nghĩa cho động từ “sings”, vì vậy cần dùng "beautifully".

Word form sẽ không có công thức học rõ ràng nhưng gồm các dấu hiệu nhận biết sau dựa vào đuôi của từ:

• Danh từ thường kết thúc bằng: -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity

• Tính từ thường kết thúc bằng: -ful, -ive, -al, -ous

• Trạng từ thường kết thúc bằng: -ly

• Động từ thường là: từ gốc hoặc đuôi -ize, -en

Lỗi sai phổ biến khi làm bài Word Form và cách tránh

Sai chính tả

Nhiều người học có thể biết rõ từ gốc nhưng lại gặp khó khi thêm hậu tố (Suffix trong tiếng Anh) để biến đổi từ đúng cách. Một số lỗi sai thường gồm: 

• Tự thêm chữ cái không cần thiết: develop → developement (sai)

• Không nhân đôi phụ âm cuối: begin → begining (sai)

• Không bỏ chữ cái cần thiết: argue → arguement (sai)

Nhằm khắc phục lỗi đánh vần khi làm bài Word form, người học cần lưu ý một số quy tắc về hậu tố. 

Nhầm lẫn giữa đuôi -ed và -ing trong tính từ

Một số tính từ trong tiếng Anh mang nghĩa tương đồng nhau nhưng có quy tắc áp dụng khác nhau tùy vào chủ ngữ hoặc ngữ cảnh. Như từ “bored” và “boring” đều mang nghĩa chán, nhưng người học không được sử dụng trong tất cả ngữ cảnh. Sau đây là cách dễ nhận biết giữa chúng:

• Đuôi -ed: Miêu tả cảm xúc của con người hoặc động vật. Ví dụ: I was bored. (Tôi cảm thấy chán)

• Đuôi -ing: Diễn tả tính chất hoặc đặc điểm của sự vật, sự việc gây ra cảm xúc cho con người, động vật. Ví dụ: The movie was boring. (Bộ phim thật chán.)
