Hello everyone! Today, I'm excited to share with you a fascinating aspect of Vietnamese culture: our textiles. Vietnam boasts a truly rich and diverse textile heritage. The indigenous knowledge of weaving has been passed down through countless generations, and you can see the incredible craftsmanship in every single piece. Local artisans, especially women in many regions, dedicate their lives to this art form, creating fabrics with amazing skill.
Historically, there's been a wonderful cultural exchange of weaving techniques and designs between the different ethnic groups across Vietnam. This has led to the stunning variety of styles we see today. If you look closely at traditional Vietnamese fabrics, you'll often see they feature motifs inspired by the beautiful nature around us – think of flowers, animals, and even landscapes. These designs don't just look pretty; they often incorporate patterns that carry important symbolic meanings within their communities.
When you look at Vietnamese textiles, you'll notice a wide range in their overall aesthetic. From the simple, elegant beauty of plain silk to the incredibly detailed beauty of embroidered pieces, there's something for everyone. And speaking of detail, the intricate designs you find in many traditional brocades and batiks really highlight the exceptional talent and dedication of the weavers. The history of the kimono
The garment similar to today’s kimono first emerged during Japan's Heian Period (794-1185). It was typically paired with the Chinese-inspired hakama (a long skirt, either split or unseparated into legs like trousers), or a type of apron called a mo. Eventually, it became fashionable to wear the kimono-style garment without the hakama, which led to the invention of the obi – a wide sash used to hold the robe together.
By the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), the kimono became a common choice for everyday wear, and layering garments became popular. This is believed to be when the traditional Japanese color combinations were first explored, with colors representing the seasons, gender, and occasionally, political or familial associations. During the Edo Period (1603-1868), kimono-making evolved into a highly specialized craft, and some kimonos became so intricate that they could cost more than an entire house. These expensive garments were often passed down through generations.
The kimono’s popularity was due in large part to its versatility. It could be layered or adapted for different seasons. For example, heavy silk kimonos were worn during the fall and winter, while the lighter yukata, made from linen or cotton, was worn in the summer. The yukata is still commonly worn during summer festivals and fireworks displays (miyabi).
Since the Edo Period, the styles of men’s and women’s kimonos have largely remained unchanged. However, over time, the complexity of wearing a kimono, combined with the cumbersome sandals required, led to its decline in popularity. The kimono fell out of favor during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), when the government encouraged the adoption of Western clothing styles.
Though often passed down through generations, kimonos can be quite expensive, sometimes costing hundreds of pounds. This is due to the high-quality materials used, such as silk and linen, as well as the intricate hand-finishing of seams and edges. The most expensive kimonos are typically reserved for special occasions, and more affordable cotton versions (yukata) are now widely available in Japan.
While kimonos are admired by fashion enthusiasts worldwide, in Japan, they are closely tied to manners and etiquette. Wearing the correct kimono for the occasion conveys respect and gratitude. A person’s rank, formality, and social status can be indicated through the kimono’s design, colors, and even the way the obi is tied. Additionally, it is traditional to wear the left side of the kimono over the right, as wearing the right over left is reserved only for a deceased person dressed for burial.
1. According to the passage, the obi became a necessary part of wearing kimono-style clothing because:
A) It was influenced by Chinese fashion during the Heian Period.
B) People stopped wearing the hakama to hold the robe closed.
C) Layering kimonos became fashionable in the Kamakura Period.
D) The government encouraged the adoption of Western clothing.
2. The passage suggests that during the Kamakura Period, traditional Japanese color combinations for kimonos were often based on:
A) The cost of the materials used.
B) The skill of the kimono maker.
C) Seasons, gender, and social connections.
D) Popularity among foreign visitors.
3. The yukata is described as a type of kimono that is:
A) Typically made of heavy silk for winter wear.
B) Commonly worn during summer festivals and fireworks displays.
C) Reserved for highly formal occasions.
D) Only affordable to wealthy families.
4. According to the passage, the kimono's popularity declined during the Meiji Period due to:
A) The increased complexity of kimono-wearing.
B) A shortage of traditional materials like silk and linen.
C) The government's promotion of Western clothing styles.
D) Kimonos becoming too expensive to produce.
5. The passage indicates that the way a kimono is worn can signify:
A) The wearer's personal fashion preferences.
B) The availability of different colors and designs.
C) The level of respect, formality, and social standing.
D) Whether the garment is made of cotton or silk.

Celebrating Tet: A Guide to Vietnam’s Lunar New Year Traditions
A.
Tet Nguyen Dan, commonly known as the Lunar New Year, is the most significant celebration in Vietnam. It marks the beginning of a new year and is celebrated with an abundance of colors, decorations, and a joyful spirit across the country. The streets come alive with the brightness of red lanterns, vibrant flowers, and an atmosphere full of hope, as people get ready to welcome the upcoming year.
B.
As Tet represents fresh starts and new beginnings, it is common for people to spend the weeks leading up to the holiday cleaning and tidying their homes. This tradition, which involves everything from dusting furniture to trimming gardens, is rooted in the belief that a clean home will attract good fortune. All cleaning must be completed before the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, when the Kitchen God ascends to Heaven to report to the Jade Emperor. During this period, families also decorate their homes with colorful plants and flowers. Some popular choices are chrysanthemums, gerberas, and lilies, but the most essential plants are peach blossoms in the North, apricot blossoms in the South, and kumquat trees, which symbolize prosperity, abundance, and vitality for the coming year.
C.
Food plays a vital role in Tet, and the phrase “ăn Tết,” which translates to “eat Tet,” highlights the importance of feasting during this time. On a traditional Tet table, there are a variety of dishes prepared to honor the ancestors and enjoy with family members. These include boiled chicken, pork ham, fried egg rolls, and regional specialties like jellied fatty meat in the cold North or braised pork with eggs in the South. One dish that is inseparable from Tet celebrations is banh chung – a sticky rice cake filled with pork and mung beans and wrapped in dandelion leaves. This cake, dating back thousands of years, symbolizes the devotion and respect that families have for their ancestors. When families come together to prepare the banh chung, it strengthens their bond and reflects the spirit of reunion and love. Alongside these traditional dishes, Tet is also a time for indulging in sweets such as sticky rice cakes, cooked hams, and candied fruits.
D.
For many Vietnamese people, Tet is a time to reunite with family. After fulfilling their spiritual duties during the holiday, people visit the homes of relatives and friends to exchange greetings and wishes for a prosperous year. One of the most exciting customs during Tet is the giving of li xi, or lucky money, which is usually presented in red envelopes. This gesture is meant to bring luck and happiness to both the giver and the recipient. The amount of money can vary depending on the relationship, but it is considered important to use new bills for the occasion. When receiving li xi, it is customary to accept it with both hands and offer well-wishes in return. Typically, adults and married individuals give li xi to children and elders. If you are in Vietnam during Tet, you may also want to prepare red envelopes to give to your friends as a sign of good fortune.
E.
Visiting temples during Tet is a common tradition for many families. It is believed that Tet is the most sacred time to honor and pray to ancestors and deities. Many people visit pagodas and temples to ask for blessings for the year ahead. These places offer a peaceful environment where individuals can reflect on the past year and look forward to new opportunities. Some families prefer visiting smaller, quieter temples, especially those located in nearby provinces, to enjoy both the spiritual atmosphere and the scenic beauty of the spring season.
F.
Tet is not just about looking back at the previous year but also about looking ahead with optimism. The start of the new year represents growth, prosperity, and the chance to set new goals. This year, which is the year of the Snake, symbolizes authority, prosperity, and good fortune. After overcoming difficulties in the past year, many people feel hopeful for brighter prospects in the year to come. The arrival of the new year brings a sense of anticipation, with people eager to embrace fresh opportunities, whether for personal growth, academic achievements, or professional success.
